Mytholm Works site could take a leaf out of Growing Power’s book

Given rising food prices and increasing food shortages, we need to grow more food and make sure it’s affordable. So maybe using Mytholm Works for intensive urban farming, including aquaponics, would be a better use of the site than building a supermarket? This idea came up at the recent Friends of Mytholm public meeting.

The upstairs room at Stubbing Wharf pub was full when Friends of Mytholm gathered at Sunday lunchtime to discuss the Belmont Homes and Setbray Properties proposal to build a car park, hotel and small supermarket on the Mytholm Works site, opposite the pub.

Hebden Royd Town Council adopts wind turbine guidelines

Hebden Royd Town Council has recently adopted guidelines that it will use when considering wind turbine planning applications.

At the Hebden Royd Town Council meeting on 23 May 2012, the Council approved wind farm guidance from the Strategy and Review Committee meeting on 25 April 2012.

No wind turbines in Special Protection Area

The guidelines require the Council to refuse applications for wind turbines in the Special Protection Area of moors to the west of Hebden Bridge, and in areas where turbine construction would disturb or destroy peatcover.

A new study based on long term monitoring data about bird populations at 18 windfarm sites has come up with a mix of disturbing and reassuring information. In line with previous studies, this one found that the effect of wind farms on bird densities varies depending on the bird species.
