999 Call for the NHS practice walk from Huddersfield to Dewsbury Sunday 1st June

If anyone fancies some practice to test out the route and timing for the Save Calderdale and Huddersfield A&Es side march to the main Call 999 for the NHS Jarrow – London march, you’re welcome to join Katherine Horner and her mum who will be walking the route from Huddersfield to Dewsbury on Sunday 1st June, starting from Huddersfield bus station at 11am.

Unfortunately Katherine has had to cancel the 27th May practice walk  from Calderdale Royal Hospital to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Katherine is organising the side march, to take place on 23rd and 24th August. It will start at Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax and go past Huddersfield and Dewsbury Hospitals to the outskirts of Wakefield, where the march will join the main 999 Call for the NHS Jarrow to London march. College of Emergency Medicine finds A&E patients are not as stupid as NHS commissioners think

A&E patients are not as stupid as NHS commissioners think.

A review carried out by the College of Emergency Medicine has found that only 15% of over 3,000 patients who attended 12 A&E departments over a 24 hour period could have been treated in the community.

This gives the lie to NHS Commissioners’ view that people attending A&E unnecessarily are putting A&E departments under so much pressure that they often can’t see patients within four hours of admittance. Continue reading

Community energy projects held back by government’s “green crap” attitude

Community energy projects are being held back by inadequate Government support, says a research report from University of East Anglia (UEA). Why does this matter? After all, community energy projects are small scale and aren’t going to change the world.

Still, the UK government’s 2009 Low Carbon Transition Plan places a lot of emphasis on the role of households and communities in reducing energy use and developing low carbon electricity generation, so presumably the Government that once declared itself the “greenest government ever” would want community energy to thrive.

But that was before David Cameron was reported as saying it was time to get rid of all the “green crap”.

Update 20.3.2022: The Observer reported yesterday that Cameron’s decision to cut ‘green crap’ now costs each household in England £150 a year. An analysis by Carbon Brief shows that energy bills in the UK are nearly £2.5bn higher than they would have been if climate policies had not been scrapped over the past decade. The Observer summarised:

“Analysis by Carbon Brief looked at the cumulative effect of ending onshore wind subsidies, cutting energy efficiency funding and scrapping a programme to make all new homes carbon neutral. It also factored in cuts to solar energy subsidies.

“With the energy price cap already at £1,277 a year and rising to £1,971 in less than a fortnight and an expected £3,000 in October, the analysis found that maintaining the green policies would have reduced energy costs by £8.3bn a year for the economy overall, part of which would equate to £150 a year per household.”

Save our A&Es, Protect our NHS at Halifax Gala on 14th June – face painters, musicians, children, doctors and nurses wanted!

Non-party political Save Our A&Es campaigners, including Calderdale NHS 38 Degrees, will have a stand and a float at Halifax Gala on 14th June. The aim is to call for everyone to protect our A&Es and NHS against the proposed shakeup to Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield NHS. This includes the proposed downgrade of Calderdale A&E to a minor injuries unit and sending all acute and emergency services to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The campaigners need face painters – no experience required, we might just stick with the clown theme for that – musicians and other volunteers. Please get in touch with Gary Scott on facebook or email him at garyscotthx1@gmx.co.uk Continue reading

EU/US Trade and Investment treaty needs to be got rid of altogether – NHS exemption isn’t possible

Christine Hyde, a member of Dewsbury Keep Our NHS Public, has created a petition calling on David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt to “Keep NHS Health Service Provision Fully Exempt from the EU/US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement, currently under negotiation.”

If TTIP goes ahead, it will give powers to multinational corporations to demand access to ALL public service contracts, as of right, and will extend their powers to sue governments if they don’t get what they want.

However, since creating the petition, Christine has found that the available exemption under the trade rules that govern the TTIP does not cover the NHS. Continue reading

Calder Valley MP’s questions find no breaches of abortion law

Craig Whittaker MP recently submitted written questions about breaches in abortion law to the Secretary of State. The Secretary of State’s answers make it clear that the Calder Valley MP is barking up the wrong tree.

All the answers show that doctors who terminate pregnancies are totally legit; and that two doctors must certify that, in their opinion, which must be formed in good faith, a request for an abortion meets at least one (and the same) of the grounds laid out in the Abortion Act 1967. Continue reading
