Hebden Bridge Matters…to Hibu/Yell Ltd

OK so let’s start 2013 as I mean to go on – having a good clear out.

First up on my pile of junk is the fact that the Hibu plc/Yell Ltd advertising directory, masquerading as a “community” magazine for Hebden Bridge, doesn’t pay its writers and photographers. The Hibu magazine content submission agreement specifies that:

‘You (the “Author”) hereby irrevocably grant to Yell Limited, its affiliates, and Magazine (collectively the “Publisher”) the unrestricted, perpetual, worldwide right to use the Content freely in whole or in part in any manner or medium now known or hereinafter devised for any purpose, commercial or otherwise, without compensation.’

Still time for households to apply for an air source heat pump free survey

As previously reported, Blackshawhead Environmental Action Team (BEAT) has been working with British Gas to have heavily-discounted air source heat pumps (ASHPs) installed in local houses which are not connected to mains gas. Finn Jensen of BEAT says,

“The British Gas ASHP offer is not just for Blackshaw Head so if anyone else who is not on mains gas is interested we will forward that to British Gas.”

Extended deadline means there’s still time for a free survey

The deadline for the installation of an air source heat pump with a discount of around £10,000 has now been extended by the government to the end of March 2013. So if you’re off the gas mains and want a free survey of your house to see if it’s suitable and to get a quote for the discounted installation cost (usually around £5-6,000) please email finn.jensen@rocketmail.com with your phone number(s).

Forget the Green Deal – demand an Energy Bill Revolution

The Energy Bill Revolution campaign is urging the government to use the money it gets from carbon taxes to make our homes super-energy efficient – driving down our energy bills forever. And also reducing household carbon emissions and the need for energy.

If you haven’t already signed the Energy Bill Revolution petition, you can do it here.

Dec 13th Sustainable Building Materials workshop with Derek Deighton

Hebden Bridge Self-Build group invites members and the public to an  interactive workshop on Sustainable Building Materials and Structures, with Derek Deighton, a former lecturer on Sustainability and Construction at Blackburn University.

The workshop is on Thursday December 13th 6.30 for 7- 9, at the former Nutclough Tavern, Keighley Road, Hebden Bridge.

Please come with questions, say the Self-build group. This is what the “interactive” bit is.

Here’s an interesting blog about Amsterdam self build housing.

Please sign petition to protect internet freedoms

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) is highlighting the risks to internet freedoms, as a United Nations agency plans to adopt new rules. Without internet freedoms, it’s possible that you wouldn’t be reading this, or a lot of other information that you currently access online. The ITUC says,

“The internet as we know it is at risk. Unless we act now, our right to freely communicate and share information could change forever.

At a conference in Dubai this December, the International Telecommunications Union (or ITU), a United Nations agency, is planning to adopt new rules, including some nasty surprises which could clamp down on the fundamental freedoms of citizens online.

Big telecommunications corporations have joined with countries including China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, countries that already impose heavy restrictions on internet freedoms, to put forward proposals to new treaty at the UN World Conference on International Telecommunications.

So far the proposal has flown under the radar, thanks to the secretive nature of the ITU, but its implications are so serious that we must act quickly to show the ITU and its member countries that citizens will not stand by while our right to communicate freely is undermined.

Please help by signing the petition from Going To Work and Equal Times from the International Trade Union Confederation.”

The ITUC reports that more than 15,000 people have signed the petition internationally now, and this is being noticed by many people involved in the upcoming UN World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT). This has had a positive impact, as the ITUC explains:

“It’s meant that we’ve had the opportunity today to present  concerns in person at a meeting with the head of the UK delegation to the conference.

We had a positive exchange about many of the issues we’re particularly worried about. We were encouraged that the UK Government shares a number of our concerns, and will be sending a high level delegation comprising government, industry, and some civil society members to the conference.

We found a good degree of common ground, and think we’ll be able to work constructively with them on next week’s conference and the series of UN events following on from it. Other unions around the world are working to lobby their own country delegations, as are the ITUC internationally.

So there’s still all to play for at the WCIT conference, but we can prevent dictatorial governments using the UN process to help them monitor and censor the Net.”

So, please sign the petition and spread the word. The ITUC say,

“The more people who know about the decisions being taken next week in Dubai, the greater the public profile of the event, and the more pressure we can bring to bear on delegations.”

Ask your MP to stop government misuse of international aid to boost corporate profits

You can contact your MP (Craig Whittaker for those of us in Calderdale) via the World Development Movement website to ask for a Parliamentary inquiry into the latest ConDem manoeuvre to redistribute wealth in favour of the already rich, – in this case, by using international aid to boost business profits rather than to help poverty-stricken citizens to benefit from something approaching decent, essential public services.

Support campaign to place West Coast main line back in public ownership

Action For Rail together with the TUC Going to Work are campaigning to place the West Coast railway line in public ownership. They are asking people to write to their MP about this.

The state has successfully run the East Coast main line as a public service for the last two years, following the failure of two private franchises. Now the West Coast franchise is in a mess and costing the taxpayer £40m.

Going to Work says:

The Department for Transport has announced a review into the details of the West Coast franchise and a further general review into the future of franchising. But the Secretary of State has made clear that public ownership will not even be considered as an option.

The government will be extending Virgin’s current franchise up to a year and then holding not one but two further franchise bidding rounds for West Coast, all in order to keep the service in private hands.”

They urge people to write to their MP supporting the West Coast mainline return to public ownership.
