Save Our Shops (SOS) Hebden Bridge are calling for people to support their campaign when Calderdale Council Planning Committee consider Sainsburys’ amendments to their planning application for the Old Fire Station site on Valley Road (Ref 13/01542/FUL) in Hebden Bridge.
The date of this Committee Meeting has not yet been set, but the Calderdale Planning Officer, Richard Seaman, has told SOS Hebden Bridge member Hilary Chadwick that it will be either on the 5th August, or on the 26th August – the day after the bank holiday. Planning Committee meetings take place in Halifax Town Hall and ones that are likely to interest the public usually are scheduled for 6pm.
Sainsburys have taken more than 4 months to submit this extra information and now they are pushing for a speedy outcome. Continue reading
The Climate News Network reports that a German Institute for Wood Research has come up with a way to use wood to make insulation foam, as a replacement for polystyrene and other fossil fuel based foams.
This is a genuine question to which, at the time of writing, UCV Plain Speaker didn’t know the answer.
Now, thanks to the wonders of social media, Dave Taylor, a Green Councillor in York, has provided an answer. In short, the answer is no. The reason why is outlined below, in the section “York Councillor Dave Taylor comes up with the answers”.

Calderdale Council Licensing Subcommittee has approved a licence for the sale of alcohol between 7am-11pm, 7 days a week at Sainsbury’s Local on Valley Road, Hebden Bridge, even though the store hasn’t yet got planning permission.
At the licence application hearing on 13th February, the solicitor representing Sainsbury’s said,
“If you took alcohol out of the store, the incremental impact is very significant. I’m virtually sure that Sainsbury’s Local wouldn’t open this store if it didn’t get the alcohol licence.”
A price survey for a representative basket of grocery and household items, carried out last week by SOS Hebden Bridge, has found that the Hebden Bridge Coop is the clear winner on price, with the basket of goods costing £28.58. This is 24% cheaper than at Sainsbury’s Local in Mytholmroyd.
The SOS Hebden Bridge survey report says,
“Overall, the same basket cost most at Sainsbury’s in Mytholmroyd (£35.46) then One Stop (£34.84), then Oasis (£34.23). then cheapest, by quite a margin, £28.58 at the Co-op. This is £6.88 (or 24%) cheaper than Sainsbury’s.”

I question your statement, reported in the Hebden Bridge Times, that a proposed new supermarket to be developed on the Mytholm Works site will create new jobs.
In fact, new large supermarkets destroy more jobs than they create. One source of evidence for this is the paper “Superstores and Employment in Retailing” by Dr David Thorpe, Head of Research, John Lewis Partnership, October 1999.
