Calderdale Council Scrutiny Panel to investigate hospitals cuts and shakeup proposals

At a packed meeting on 1st July, Calderdale Council Adults Health and Scrutiny Panel accepted a petition signed by 118 people, asking the Scrutiny Panel to use its powers to call in the NHS bosses to explain their proposed hospital cuts and service changes.

The Council recently asked the hospitals Trust to withdraw their proposals to shake up health services by cutting acute and emergency hospital services and replacing them with care in the community. But the Trust has gone ahead regardless.

A leaked Trust document, discussed at a 5th June meeting of the Trust’s Executive Board, shows that the Trust is secretly planning to start making the cuts this month, even though the public consultation on the proposals hasn’t yet happened. Continue reading →

Calderdale Council’s “People’s Commission” into future of health and social care lacks formal powers

Members of the public who attended recent “Right Care” drop in sessions reported that Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) supports Calderdale Council’s proposed “People’s Commission” into the future of health and social care in Calderdale.

Now Calderdale Council has followed up with a press release announcing the “People’s Commission” launch.

The Council’s “People’s Commission” seems to add another layer to local NHS organisations’ public “engagement’ and consultation about their ‘Right Care” proposals. These proposals aim to reduce costly acute and emergency hospital admissions and replace these hospital services with cheaper care health and social care in the community for patients with long term illnesses. Report on North Halifax public drop in session on future of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS

Janet Bertola attended the  public “engagement” drop in session about the future of Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS and social care at New Beginnings, North Halifax on 10th June.  This is Janet’s report:

I got there at about 2.30pm and by the open door there was a large 2 metre free-standing poster advertising the event. The hall was laid out in areas with posters and staff from the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the Hospitals Trust and Locala available to talk.  It would have been better if the staff wore name tags so you could see who you were talking to and what organisation they represented, although the Locala staff member was clearly identifiable since she wore a uniform. Staff “better prepared” at poorly attended Hanson Lane drop in on the future of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS

Two members of the public – Anna Best and Calderdale 38 Degrees NHS member Dr Chris Day – report here on the 9th June Hanson Lane drop in session about the future of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS.

Anna said that the representatives at the Hanson Lane drop-in event gave out leaflets and information, listened to her concerns and wrote down a number of her questions and suggestions. Member of public loses will to live after attending Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS drop in

A member of the public who attended the “Right Care” drop in session at Salendine Nook
YMCA earlier this week was disappointed in its vagueness and its poor advertising, which
meant hardly anyone attended.

The drop ins are supposed to allow the public to take part in decision making about the
future of Calderdale and Huddersfield hospitals and community healthcare. This is an
urgent matter, because according to a Greater Huddersfield Clinical Commissioning Group (GHCCG) Freedom of Information response, the new out-of-hospital community healthcare “model” is intended to be in place by April 2015. Continue reading →

Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS shake up questionnaire – have you filled it in?

This is my response to Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group’s questionnaire about the future of hospital and community health and social care services in Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield. Have you completed yours? You can download the questionnaire here . You’ll find it’s on page 12 of that pdf leaflet “The future of hospital and community services – Get involved and have your say.” Because it’s a pdf download, if you want to word process your reply, rather than write it by hand, you’ll need to copy the .pdf questionnaire form and save it as a .doc file or whatever word processing programme you use. I accuse Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group of misleading the public. Imo they are presenting government plans to covertly privatise the NHS as if they are local doctors’ and nurses’ ideas for improving patient care and saving money for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS. There is no reliable evidence that their proposals improve patient care and people’s health or that they cut costs.

EU/US Trade and Investment treaty needs to be got rid of altogether – NHS exemption isn’t possible

Christine Hyde, a member of Dewsbury Keep Our NHS Public, has created a petition calling on David Cameron and Jeremy Hunt to “Keep NHS Health Service Provision Fully Exempt from the EU/US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement, currently under negotiation.”

If TTIP goes ahead, it will give powers to multinational corporations to demand access to ALL public service contracts, as of right, and will extend their powers to sue governments if they don’t get what they want.

However, since creating the petition, Christine has found that the available exemption under the trade rules that govern the TTIP does not cover the NHS. Continue reading →
