Ban the Burn blanket bog walk 23rd September

All are invited to join a Ban the Burn walk around the Walshaw Dean area of Walshaw Moor Estate on Sunday 23rd September. The walk will be an opportunity for people who want to see the site and haven’t been before.

Here’s Natural England’s map of this unit of the Site of Special Scientific Interest:

The map shows that Heather Hill and units 48 and 51 to each side of it are in unfavourable condition and not recovering (no change)

Japan phasing out nuclear power by 2040

In the wake of the 2010 Fukishima nuclear power station disaster, the Japanese government has announced that it will phase out nuclear power before 2040. “Every policy resource will be brought to bear to make it possible to have zero nuclear power plants in operation by the 2030s,” a Japanese cabinet energy policy document states.

Why burn blanket bog? Environmental Information Regulation request gets dusty answer

In a post titled £2.5m uplands agreement seems to sidestep Burning Code, I asked why Natural England has given Walshaw Moor Estate an explicit exemption from the Heather and Grass Burning Code.

I’ve sent an Environmental Information Regulations request to Natural England, asking them  why they have done this.

Round 1 – National England fails to answer my question

Walshaw Moor Estate Environmental Stewardship Agreement requires extensive grip blocking

Here’s an outline of the key points in the Walshaw Moor Estate (WME) Environmental Stewardship Agreement and the related March 2012 Natural England/WME Notice of Proposal and Consent  to Carry Out Operations on a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Information I have obtained from Environmental Information Regulations requests suggests that the Environmental Stewardship Agreement may be based on a flawed environmental impact assessment (technically called an Appropriate Assessment). If this is in fact the case, this raises the need for an investigation into the appropriateness and legality of the Environmental Stewardship Agreement. Ban the Burn campaigners are asking the European Commission to investigate this question.

Thanks to everyone who visited Energy Royd in August

Aside

Over the last 28 days, there were 2,002 visitors to Energy Royd.

1,589 were unique visitors

1,268 were new visitors.

There was a big spike of 280 visitors in one day in early August and 143 people came from a tweet. I think this was probably from George Monbiot retweeting news about the start of the Ban the Burn campaign.

There was also a spike of around 150 visitors on August 12th, when I was live blogging the Ban the Burn launch. The most popular pages throughout August were about the Ban the Burn campaign and related issues, apart from the post on Green Deal – a public private partnership too far, which 54 people read. I hope more people will read this, because it’s an issue that Leeds City Region is making policy decisions about now and mostly, people don’t seem aware of what’s going on.

53 people registered to create an account, but I accidentally deleted all the A-I names a few days ago, sorry.

52 visits came from a link to Energy Royd in the Guardian Northerner blog, 13 from a link in New Internationalist and 41 from a link in Hebweb.
