“Patient choice” and NHS use of the private sector runs down NHS care and penalises the poor and elderly

A recent study –  the first to look at the impact on NHS provision of diverting NHS funds to the private sector – shows that private sector contracts are associated with a decrease in NHS provision and an increase in treatment inequalities.

This finding brings home the urgent need for the NHS Reinstatement Bill, which was
successfully reintroduced to the House of Commons by Labour MP Margaret Greenwood on 13 July, with support from Labour, Green, and Lib Dem MPs.

Drafted by barrister Peter Roderick and Public Health Professor Allyson Pollock, the Bill proposes to fully restore the NHS as an accountable public service by reversing 25 years of marketisation, abolishing the purchaser-provider split, ending contracting, and re-establishing public bodies and public services accountable to local communities. Why Jason McCartney MP doesn’t support the NHS (Reinstatement) Bill: More contradictions than you can shake a stick at

At the Hands off HRI Rally on Saturday 27th February, Jason McCartney MP said he would do everything in his power to keep the hospital open.

So the Chair of North Kirklees Support the NHS, Christine Hyde, said to him:

“Well in that case you could go to the House on 11 March and debate the cross party Bill called the NHS Bill and vote for it.”

Ms Hyde reported that Mr McCartney told her that if he was able to, he would.

However, Mr McCartney later told Plain Speaker:

“I have said on no occasion that I would support this Bill. On checking my diary I have commitments in the constituency that day so will not be able to attend the debate or vote either way on it. Continue reading →

Growing Futures are very shocked at what’s happening to the NHS

As a group working for a fair, healthy, sustainable food system that can help solve the epidemic of obesity and diabetes caused by the current dysfunctional food system, Growing Futures recently took part in the Voluntary Action Calderdale workshop on Understanding how the NHS works in Calderdale.

The  main information at the Workshop was that the NHS in Calderdale now operates just like any marketplace.

The VAC training workshop was part of its 3 year, £750K contract with Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group, for Third Sector Development and Support. Continue reading →
