At the 27th June DCarb Upper Calder Valley meeting, Emma Appleton, Calderdale Council’s Environmental Officer, gave an update on Calderdale’s Energy Future (CEF) Strategy since it came into effect on 1st April this year.
Work has been going on figuring out how to resource the commitments in the Strategy. The role of the new Calderdale Energy Future Panel is now clear and Calderdale Council is calling for members.
The kind of members Calderdale Council’s looking for
Calderdale Council is looking to appoint ten CEF Panel members. They will come from community groups, businesses (both small & medium enterprises, and large businesses), universities etc.
Members need to be influential and have good networks and skills in the energy business. Twenty of Calderdale’s major employers were involved in the development of Calderdale’s Energy Future strategy document and the call for EP Panel members will go out to them, from the Calderdale Council Chief Executive and Councillor Barry Collins.
Signing the Calderdale Energy Future Covenant
CEF Panel members will all sign the Calderdale Energy Future Covenant or Agreement (The name is still to be decided – the document is still a draft.)
Emma presented the draft CEF Covenant. It is a statement of signatories’ commitment to:
- reduce carbon emissions in line with the Calderdale Energy Future target
- create a socially equitable low carbon economy
- preserve and enhance Calderdale’s natural resources
- improve local people’s health and wellbeing
- share best practice
- report annually on progress to the CEF Panel
What will the Energy Future Panel’s role be?
The CEF Panel’s role will be to administer the implementation of Calderdale’s Energy Future with a “light touch”. It will monitor Calderdale’s progress towards the carbon emissions reduction target, and catalyse Calderdale’s Energy Future projects. For example, this could involve generating low carbon projects to go into the proposed Leeds City Region Green Economy Panel investment pipeline.

People who’d like to apply for CEF Panel membership should send their CV with a supporting letter to energyfuture@calderdale.gov.uk. The supporting letter should set out how you meet the criteria for membership and how you’ll be able to support the work of the Panel. The deadline is 27th July 2012. The first CEF Panel meeting will be on 3rd September 2012.
