Petition Education Secretary to WITHDRAW decision to impose Sponsored Academy status on Calder High School

You can download and print out a Petition regarding Calder High. (Use back button to return to this page once you’ve downloaded the Petition).  Guidance on printing out, filling in and returning the petition to the organiser is at the end of this post.

Or you can email the petition organiser for more information and/or to ask her to send you a copy of the petition.

The Petition invites signatures from Calder High School parents, staff and students, and local residents within the school’s catchment area which is from Halifax to Todmorden, before the deadline of 18th February. This will allow time to get it to Gove before the sponsor matching process is finished.

The Petition is as follows:

Petition regarding CALDER HIGH SCHOOL, Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire

We the undersigned, as stakeholders in Calder High School, do not want our community school of sixty years standing to be given away to an academy sponsor.

We demand that the Secretary of State for Education WITHDRAW the decision to impose Sponsored Academy status on Calder High School, which we know to be an adequate and currently improving school.

We demand a full and thorough PUBLIC consultation with all stakeholders before any future decisions about converting our school to an academy, are made.                            February 2013

The name and postal address to return the signed petition form to are given on the downloadable Petition regarding Calder High. (Use back button to return to this page once you’ve downloaded the Petition). You can email the petition organiser for more information.

A few words from the petition organiser

Please find attached a petition form to the Secretary of State for Education, objecting
to the forcing of sponsored academy status onto Calder High. This has arisen from
communications between some parents and community members after the recent parents’
meeting and public meeting about this issue. There seems to be widespread opposition to
the D of E’s actions which have been imposed on the school without consultation so we
feel we should at least register our disapproval – this is happening to schools all over
the country. As the academy conversion is proceeding very quickly we should be grateful
for your support .
I am circulating this as widely as possible with the following request:

Please collect as many signatures as possible – pupils, parents/carers and family members, staff, local residents within the school’s catchment area which is from Halifax to
Todmorden although feeder schools are within upper Calder Valley. Deadline of 18th
February so there’s time to get it to Gove before sponsor matching process is finished.

The whole petition will be posted to the Secretary of State for Education.

How to print out, fill in and return the petition to the organiser

Printing

Before printing it out, you need to make sure it fits on an A4 sheet. To do this:

  • save it as a pdf file
  • when you’ve saved it, check that the box at the top of the PDF shows 100%.

If it’s bigger, click the – sign to the left of the box to get the figure to 100%.If it’s smaller than 100%, click the + sign. It needs to be 100% to fit properly on an A4.

If this is all too much, email June Eaton, the petition organiser, and she will send you a copy.

Printing out the petition double sided would save paper.

Collecting signatures

All signatures must be on the full text sheet with all wording, even if it is the
second side of the sheet to be signed – so please don’t carry on on the back of a sheet
if it is blank not printed.
PLEASE ASK PEOPLE TO BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SIGN TWICE. There may be lots of people collecting signatures (I hope!), so they may have already signed with someone else.

Returning signed sheets to the organiser
PLEASE POST ALL SIGNED SHEETS TO JUNE EATON un-numbered, I shall then collate and number them and send off.

Full sheets will be MUCH easier to deal with, so please try to pass partly filled sheets
to someone else to continue collecting signatures. Don’t worry if you can’t do this,
please send them back to me anyway BY THE DEADLINE OF FEBRUARY 18th, 2013, to
June Eaton
Lower Crimsworth Cottage
Pecket Well
Hebden Bridge
HX7 8RB
Thank you very much.

Please share this with any other local residents or Calder High contacts you may have.
